Learning to make my own snacks with these simple sesame crackers has been so fun! These sesame crackers are amazing on their own or with dips or other snack items.
When I start to watch what I am eating during the new year, snacks are essential. And since the market is over saturated with sooo many options for different diet requirements, I wanted to go back to basics with these simple sesame crackers.
- To learn how difficult it is to make basic snacks at home
- To know whats going into my food without the diet culture influence
There isn’t anything wrong about paleo, keto, gluten-free options in the market. The issues I have is they trope on how you can’t trust the industry items because you don’t know whats in your food, when in reality, they are doing the same thing.
I don’t know about you but I have no idea what erythritol is or even cassava flour. And with the added price I just don’t get the trade off. I want to focus on natural sources that aren’t overly processed like buckwheat flour, or even just using lettuce as wraps or tortillas.
On top of the overstimulation, I have been wanting to learn to make things at home.
Crackers seemed simple enough to try. With just a few simple ingredients and instruction I found this idea to be very approachable. Especially for beginners cooks.
This recipe can also be modified for different flavors. You can also used gluten free flours for sensitivities. And I find these crackers very enjoyable when you need a little power snack.
Tips for this recipe
Although this recipe is easy to approach, I wanted to explain some visual signs to get you to make the best crackers.
- Mix all your dried ingredients and inclusions in first before adding water and oil: This ensures the salt, sugar, and add-ins are equally distributed throughout the dough.
- Let the dough rest: As the dough comes together, it will get a little tough from being worked. Once you have all the dough brought together, make sure to cover and rest for at least 30 minutes.
- Roll out the dough as thin as your add-ins: To make this more manageable I divide my dough into two pieces. As I roll out my dough I try to make it as thick as the thickest inclusion in my dough. If you go thinner it will tear the dough. And if you go too thick it will make it harder to gauge cooking times.
- Give your dough more rest if you cant get it thin enough. Sometimes when you overwork dough it will spring back and stay the same size. Making it less easy to work. What I do is simply take some plastic wrap and cover the dough I was working and let it rest anywhere between 20-30 minutes. Once your dough has rested, begin rolling out again. And if it doesn’t snap back, then continue to roll out dough until its to your desired thinness.
I hope these tips help you if you tackle this recipe! And I hope you enjoy the double recipe this week. I can’t wait to bring more recipes to ya’ll in the coming weeks! Simple Sesame Crackers
Ingredients
- 3 cups All Purpose Flour
- 1 tbsp Granulated Sugar
- 2 tsp Kosher Salt
- 1 tbsp Black Sesame Seeds
- 2 tbsp Sesame Seeds
- 2 tbsp Chia Seeds
- 1/3 cup Pumpkin Seeds
- 2/3 cup Olive Oil divided
- 1 cup Water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Mix your dry ingredients: Flour, salt, sugar, both sesame seeds, chia seeds, and pumpkin seeds to a large bowl. Mix until your ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Add your water and 1/3 cup oil and mix until a shaggy dough forms. Pour out on the counter and knead any loose pieces of dry flour and dough until it all comes together, 5 minutes. Let your dough rest for 30 in a bowl covered in plastic or a kitchen towel.
- Once your dough has rested, cut your dough into 2 to 4 pieces to make it more manageable to roll out. Cover pieces you aren't working with the plastic to keep them from drying out. With a rolling pin, roll out dough to be as thin as your pumpkin seeds.
- With a cookie cutter or anything sharp, cut your crackers into snackable sized pieces. Transfer to a parchment lined baking sheet while you continue to cut out dough. If you aren't using a cookie cutter, make sure to try to get the crackers around the same size for even baking.
- With your crackers on the baking sheet. Spray with cooking spray or brush with additional oil. Place in the oven and bake 12-14 minutes, rotating half way through. You will know these are done when they develop color around the edges of the crackers.
- Wait for crackers to cool and enjoy! Eat them on their own or serve them up with dips, snacks, etc.
