Pizza, we could argue, is one of the best inventions known to man other than Thomas Edison’s electric light. It’s filling, flavorful, and extremely adaptable to your own preference. In light of current events, it’s comforting to know that certain recipes are easily executed. They don’t have to look pretty or contain anything in particular. They just have to taste good! What better way to embrace this quarantine than a good old-fashioned pizza? Quick, easy, and delicious!
Sometimes being in the mood for a stone oven style pizza isn’t the most convenient craving. In most cases a quality stone oven can cost hundreds of dollars to install and by other means are typically hard to come by unless you have a pizzeria around the corner from your house. In that case, you’re winning at life. However, there is an easier, more achievable option for those of you who don’t have that luxury. For our quick & easy grilled pizza all you’ll need is pizza dough, pizza sauce, pizza toppings, and a standard propane grill.
Pizza Crust – The backbone.
Let’s talk pizza dough? It’s quite the process isn’t it? Yeast, mixing, proofing, etc. To be completely honest we didn’t make our own dough. Although homemade pizza dough is AMAZING. We chose to take the easier route and just bought some at our local Harmons Grocery. However, if you truly want to take the extra step and make your own, all the power to you! Here’s a great recipe we’ve found by joyfoodsunshine, Laura knows what she’s talking about!
Pizza Sauce – The perfect accompaniment.
The next most important step to pizza making is the sauce! You can go in any direction with this but we decided to stick to tradition and make a simple marinara. We did make the decision to create our own homemade sauce because although store bought is much easier we wanted to create something a little more palatable in taste. For the sauce we used:
- canned whole stewed tomatoes (unsalted)
- olive oil
- fresh basil
- garlic
- salt&pepper
To incorporate all of these flavors put both the olive oil and garlic into a small saucepan and sauté until the garlic is slightly browned. Add the remaining ingredients and let it reduce on low heat for about 20 minutes. After that’s done, you’ll blend it in a food processor to create a sauce-like consistency. We chose to pulse our sauce so that the chunkiness of the whole tomatoes remained, but if you prefer a smooth sauce you can pulsate yours to its desired texture.
The Toppings – How to tie it all together.
Now we’ll move on to what ties this all together, which is the toppings! This is one of the most adaptable parts of your pizza process! You can put as much of anything you desire on our pie! We chose to make both a traditional margherita style pizza which is a combination of mozzarella cheese, basil and sliced tomatoes. As well as a roasted red pepper prosciutto style pizza.
Once you’ve decided on all of your toppings and sauces, the next step is assembly. Right about now is when we’d recommend you start up your grill so that it’s preheated in time for your pizza.
Assembly:
When it comes to the proper execution of a pizza, you’ll first start with the preparation of your dough. It doesn’t have to be a perfectly round, unless that’s what you prefer. Then depending on the spacing and width of the grate in your grill you’ll either place the dough directly on the grate or use tin foil to prevent the dough from falling through. You’ll cook the dough on one side for about 3-5 minutes or until your dough is lightly browned and you can see slight chard grill marks. Then you’ll flip the dough and start your assembly.
First comes the sauce, spread it evenly and as heavily as you prefer. Then of course comes the cheese! Load it up! Finally, you’ll throw on some toppings and close the lid so that everything can melt together! Let that sit for another 3-5 minutes, pull them off, and you’re ready to serve you quick & easy grilled pizza!
When it comes to pizza this is one of our favorite ways to create it. Not only does it make every single bite customizable to your preference. It’s also something that’s easily made alone or with the company of loved one’s. We hope you enjoy this quick & easy grilled pizza recipe as much as we do! Peace and love to you all. Stay safe out there. <3
